The Mid Autumn Festival was this past week!! Honestly, I don't really know that much about it.
People eat MoonCakes (which are ~5" diameter, about 800 calories each, and normally have
salted duck egg in the middle), light some lanterns (which they are not supposed to release,
but we saw a few anyway), look at the moon, and generally party. Also, I've heard about 5
different stories about where it started, none of them make much sense to me.
A man was really good at chopping down trees. One day he would a tree that just sprouted up
again whenever he chopped it down. He spent the rest of his life trying to chop it down.
There was a man who rolled a stone up a hill. Then it would roll back down. Then he would roll
it back up. I used to think that this was a greek story, but nope it's actually Chinese 😝
There was a pill to make you live forever, and they were going to put it in a cake and give it to
the King. But the maid ate it. And then she lived forever and somehow turned into the moon.
So yeah. We weren't able to meet with most of our investigators because they went back to
mainland. We also weren't able to party because it's a night festival and we need to SLEEP.
So we had a really quiet day and then finished it off with dinner at a members house. I love
them so much. They are so funny, and they love this gospel so much. We had about 10 moon
cakes at our house, so we tried to give our members some. When we gave them to
them they said "Why do you have moon cakes? Did you buy them?" "No....." "No one give
these missionaries Moon Cakes! They don't like them!" Now their new favorite joke is how
much we hate Moon Cakes, so we're trying to be very obvious about how much we like them
and make a big deal every time we eat one. I love our members so much!
Jokes aside though, the moon was RIDICULOUSLY bright during the festival. And just that day
too. Not the night before, not the night after, JUST that night. Maybe they're on to something.
This week we got to help Siu Pohpo on her farm! She buzzed around her house finding stools,
trowels, gloves, and sun hats for all of us. She was by far the happiest I have EVER seen her!
We pulled weeds with her for 2 hours, but I'm not actually sure how much we helped. Quite
literally she pulled more weeds than us 4 sister missionaries combined. She is so cool.
On Sunday, Siu Pohpo came to church all by herself!! We were sitting in the front with other
investigators so we didn't see her when she walked in and sat in the back. Luckily, one of her
friends in the ward came up and told us she was there after the closing prayer. We made a
BEE line to see her. Siu Pohpo amazes me, because she doesn't understand all the doctrine yet,
but what she DOES have is a BURNING testimony of Christ. She is continually amazed by and
testifies of Jesus Christ -- as her savior, as her example, as her best friend. Which is really all
you need, because Christ is the center of it all. I'm so blessed to be able to be serving in Hong
Kong. These people are sooooo incredibly busy, but once they learn about the Savior you
couldn't drag them out of the church. I admire their faith so much. People tell us that
missionaries are so amazing, and that they admire us and are blessed to have us. But WE are
the ones who are blessed to be here.
Gotta go for now. Love you all. Keep on Keeping on. The church is True and we're one day
closer to General Conference!
